This special liquid gold, otherwise known as Manuka Honey, will make any recipe a taste explosion for example as an extra in dressings for salads or a little drizzle over your porridge. As a wonderful addition to our German canola honey our whopping 500g Manuka Honey is what you never knew you needed!

The Manuka Honey's origin

Manuka Honey is obtained from the nectar of the flowers of the South Sea myrtle - Leptospermum scoparium. Since the South Sea myrtle is called Manuka by the natives of New Zealand, it is widely known as Manuka Shrub. Manuka has long been used by the Maori as a medicinal plant. The possibility of obtaining Manuka honey was discovered relatively late, however, when missionaries brought honey bees into the country in 1839. Now, where exactly is the Manuka Honey made? The real Manuka Honey comes exclusively from New Zealand and small parts of Australia. The honeycombs of the beehives set up between wild Manuka bushes are harvested gently at the time of flowering.

Unser Manuka-Honig hat zwei Besonderheiten: Zum einen wächst die Südseemyrte, aus deren Nektar der Manuka-Honig entsteht, ausschließlich in Neuseeland und einigen Gebieten Australiens. Die Verfügbarkeit der Pflanze ist somit sehr begrenzt. Zum anderen enthält unser qualitativ hochwertiger Manuka Honig 400 mg MGO. Somit weist er im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Honigsorten einen Anteil an Methylglyoxal (MGO) auf.

Du kannst unseren Manuka-Honig entweder als Brotaufstrich oder direkt pur genießen. Auch zum Süßen beim Backen oder Kochen eignet er sich. Dank seiner Hitzebeständigkeit kannst Du ihn auch in warme Getränke wie Deinen abendlichen Tee einrühren.

Manuka-Honig kann nur während der Blütezeit des Manuka-Strauchs in Neuseeland und einigen Regionen Australiens gewonnen werden. Diese beträgt jährlich nur zwei bis sechs Wochen. Die Zeit, in der die Bienen den Nektar sammeln können, ist also sehr begrenzt. Anschließend wird der Honig im schonenden Kaltschleuderverfahren aus den Honigwaben gewonnen. Es wird auf den Einsatz von Wärme verzichtet, sodass keine der wertvollen Inhaltsstoffe verloren gehen. Aber keine Sorge, das enthaltene MGO ist sowieso hitzebeständig und bleibt somit auch bei höheren Temperaturen erhalten.

Manuka-Honig sollte kühl, trocken und dunkel gelagert werden. Für eine lange Haltbarkeit wird unser Manuka-Honig besonders schonend in ein dunkles Gefäß abgefüllt.
