Buy products with no added sugar

A healthy lifestyle, losing weight and living without sugar are not just the usual new year's resolutions. They are part of our lives these days, and cutting down on sugar seem to be THE big topic in many guidebooks, blogs and podcasts. Supermarkets as well have been offering more and more low sugar and sugar free products. But where did this trend even come from and what alternatives are there if you want to quit sugar but keep your sweet treats?

We believe in eliminating unnecessary added sugar, as you may know, most of our products do not contain added sugar. We love sweetness, but we simply found better sources of sweetness than refined sugar. Many of our products are naturally sweet, so that they don't need anything added.

Our favourite products with no added sugar:
- freeze-dried strawberry slices
Medjool dates premium large with pit organic Brooks mango strips - organic cocoa raw bar
- organic energy balls
- brown almond butter
. If you want to quit refined sugar and are looking for tasty alternatives with no added sugars, you have come to the right place. You can, of course, make your days sweeter with dried fruits, but in this category you will find all types of snacks with no added sugar.

What does “no added sugar” even mean according to the law?

Buyers who buy products labelled "no added sugar" sometimes wonder why, according to the nutrition declaration, they still contain sugar. To make sure you don't feel the same way, we'll take a closer look at the term below and see what it means by definition: the designation "no added sugar" is regulated in the EU Health Claims Regulation. It may only be used if no sugar is added to the product. In this case, both mono- and disaccharides (single and double sugars) are considered sugars. Many foods, such as dried fruit, naturally contain (natural) sugar. Manufacturers often refer to this with the claim "naturally contains sugar".

Why are dried fruits with no added so sweet?

You may have noticed that dried fruit tastes even sweeter than fresh fruit. This is due to the fact that the naturally contained fructose is concentrated when the water is removed during the drying process. We also take advantage of this and therefore usually do not add any further sweetness to our favourites. Convince yourself of the naturally sweet taste of our dried fruit range, our puffed fruitfruit powders or our freeze-dried fruit. Of course, our dried dates are also a sweet classic with a wide range of uses. These are also great for baking, for example.

What effects does sugar have on your body and why give up refined sugar ?

Your body does not need industrial sugar to survive, however, individuals consume an average of 30 kg yearly, and this figure has been increasing constantly in recent years. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a maximum daily amount of 25 grams. For natural sugars, such as fructose in fruits and vegetables, there is no WHO maximum limit on daily consumption.

When we eat, the digestion process begins immediately, during which the sugars contained in carbohydrates are broken down into their basic components. This continues until only simple sugars remain. From the intestine, these sugars go into the blood stream and the blood sugar level rises. The body releases insulin as a response. Refined sugar causes the blood sugar to rise faster than fructose. Sugar is not bad in itself, we just consume way too much of it, which can lead to complications and diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Carbohydrates are the human body's energy suppliers. The body uses them in the form of glucose or glycogen, for which the carbohydrate chains must first be broken down. Glucose is then available at the end as an energy reserve. Humans can process short-chain carbohydrates faster than long-chain carbohydrates because they have to break down fewer chain links. Thus, short-chain carbohydrates also cause the blood sugar level to rise more quickly. Long-chain carbohydrates keep you full longer because they are processed more gradually, and the blood sugar level rises slowly over time.

Is sugar addictive?

You've probably been there: once you start eating sweets, you can't seem to stop. Scientists have brought up a "possible addictive potential" of sugars. The fact is that it is easy to get used to having sweets in your daily life. If you consume a lot of it and sweeten everything that gets in your way, a banana will eventually feel hardly sweet at all. On the other hand, if you stop eating sugar for a while, a simple apple seems like a bomb of sweetness. To help people lead low refined sugar lives, our shop is full of wonderful sugar alternatives. Try them:
- organic date sugar
- xylitol
- organic tapioca syrup
- organic rice syrup

What can I cook without sugar?

If you love classic spaghetti with tomato sauce, you can stop using store bought sauce with added sugar. Instead, use our tomato sauce without any unnecessary additives. You can also easily make sauce and salad dressings and refine them with our medium spicy mustard. Fast food also tends to contain a lot of added sugar. Simply make your alternative fast food at home! With our organic seitan, you can make your vegan kebab, steak or burger patty. Make your own hummus with our chickpeas. Even without added sugar, you can make countless delicious meals that usually contain the white grains.

What snacks can I have without adding sugar?

We have A LOT of those: our shop is full of ready-to-eat snacks with no added sugars. Our beloved energy balls are available in several different flavours, crunchy cookies or fruity cranberries. Our chocolate pretzels with no added sugartoffee protein balls, and our tropical coconut chips are all sweet as honey with no added sugar.

And you can also make your own sweets. You can find some inspiration in our Food Journal. You will find ideas to make your own energy balls, vegan cakes and cookies, many juicy banana bread recipes and much more! You can also create your own energy bar and add fruit puree or dried fruits for a natural sweetness component. We even offer marzipan with no added sugar, meaning that baking without adding sugar is no longer a problem!

How can I replace sugar?

If you want to replace conventional sugar but still enjoy sweetness and want to add it to your creations, there are many alternatives, such as agave syrup, applesauce or honey. Here at KoRo, you can find a lot of naturally sweet additions for your cake, pancakes or pumpkin spice latte:

- organic coconut blossom syrup
- organic date syrup
- organic maple syrup
- Deglet Nour dates
- organic date sugar

The most important thing, as always, is that balance is key. We don't want to blame sugar for all the world's evils, but we are happy to offer you all these alternatives to white sugar.
