Where do almonds come from?

The main almond-growing countries are the USA and Spain. In 2017, a total of 2,239,697 tons of almonds were produced worldwide. Hundreds of different varieties are grown. The most popular varieties include: Nonpareil, Carmel, Larguetta and Valencia. These differ mainly in size, taste and texture of the shell. Almonds are full of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats and are a great source of fiber, vitamin E, vitamin B2, magnesium and manganese. The supply of vitamin E in Germany is said to be insufficient for half of all men and women. So go for the almonds!

How long have roasted almonds been around?

Roasted almonds first appeared in an old document in 1871. It described the art of roasting al monds. In addition to almonds, the basic ingredients are sugar and water. This is all mixed together until caramelization sets in and a sweet coating forms around the nut. The sweet snack was initially known by the term "Viennese almonds ", which is still sometimes used today.

How do I make roasted almonds?

Traditionally, roasted almonds are caramelized in a pan. However, you can also make them in the microwave. We have opted for the classic version.

Roasted almonds from the pan

  • 200 g household sugar
  • 100 ml water

Put the sugar, water and cinnamon in a pan and bring to the boil. Then add the almonds and continue to simmer, stirring constantly, until the sugar dries out. Finally, place the almonds on a baking tray lined with baking paper and spread them out a little so that they can cool down well.

Tip: Make sure you use unpeeled almonds, as the sugar only sticks to the skin!

How do I spice up my roasted almonds?

If roasted almonds are too boring for you, you can spice them up with cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, grated coconut or, instead of sugar, with soy. Alternatively, you can also use other types of nuts such as macadamia, peanuts, hazelnuts and cashews. So you can mix up a colorful bag to suit your mood. Roasted almonds in a wide variety of shapes and colors are also a great gift idea for your loved ones!
