Why is the peanut called peanut?

Botanically speaking, peanuts are not even considered nuts, but legumes. The peanut was originally called "ground nut" or ground pea" because it develops under the ground. The English even nicknamed them "monkey nuts", because monkeys in the zoo would eat them by the cartful. Eventually, the name peanut settled, simply because the size of a peanut is close to pea size. When peanuts are harvested, they are taken out of the ground and dried. We then roast them in canola oil and add a touch of salt. The treat is ready for you to enjoy!
